The Ishtar Gate in Babylon
Mesopotamia

I read this book by Gwendolyn Leick, an anthropologist and Assyriologist, because I was interested in reading background to the culture and civilisation in which Abraham (in the Bible) lived before responding to god's call to leave Ur of the Chaldees. More specifically, I wanted to see if tatooing and scarification were part of that culture, as many, if not most, pagan religions practised human sacrifice and tatooing.

There is not much in it about these things, but the book is really good for background to -yes - the foundation of various cities, such as Ur, Eridu, Nippur, Nineveh and Babylon.

From that perspective I would recommend it, although it does not contain anything about tattoos!
