Soap and a sink - keep your body clean
Purity and Danger

Mary Douglas is described as, 'One of the most distinguished anthropologists active in the world today'. She has written (as you would imagine) numerous books. This one came to my attention when I was studying Gordon J. Wenham's Commentary on the Old Testament book of Leviticus and then again when I was studying John W. Kleinig's commentary of Leviticus.

Truthfully, I did not find it an easy read, but it's full of comments and ideas about taboo, purity and the dangers that go with cultural pollution (of people and bodies, not the environment). Of course, this explains Douglas' interest in Leviticus.

She has also written Leviticus as Literature, as Leviticus is itself an incredible book.

I do recommend this book, even though it may be a slow read.
