'Tattooing begins with the gods' says John Miller in The Philosophy of Tattoos. So, he starts his book in Tahiti with Ta'aroa, the supreme creator and sets out certain mythological tales about the gods and tattooing.

Another quote from Miller: ...the tattooed world is bigger, stranger, older and more diverse than I could ever do justice to.'

He splits his book into Origins, Histories, Revivals, Deviance, and Magic and includes a pretty good list of other reading.

It's a good read for background and for explaining the past and the present of tattooing. It helped me when I started researching tattoos to get an idea of what it was all about. I recommend this book.
