Pope Leo accepts honorary title from King Charles
Buckingham Palace says Pope Leo XIV has accepted an honorary title a year after meeting with King Charles.
The Dean and Canons of Windsor announced Leo has become Papal Confrater of the College of St George at St George’s Chapel, Windsor.
Charles and the Queen met the pontiff on this day last year during a state visit to the Vatican.
The King was welcomed as Royal Confrater of the Papal Basilica and Abbey of St Paul’s Outside the Walls.
On Friday, Buckingham Palace said: “This act of confraternity represents a visible sign of spiritual fellowship, ecumenical friendship and Christian fraternity.
It recognises both the centuries-old relationship between the College and Chapel of St George, Windsor and the Holy See, and the progress in relations between the Roman Catholic Church, the Church of England and the Anglican Communion.
It also reflects the deep mutual esteem between His Holiness and His Majesty and their shared desire for Christian unity.”
To mark these signs of confraternity, specially commissioned chairs have been created for the two religious sites. The chair presented to the King sits next to the monastic stalls in St Paul’s Outside the Walls, and a corresponding chair for the Pope will be unveiled at St George’s Chapel in Windsor in due course.
Meanwhile, the Pope will miss a planned trip to Assisi next week as he continues recovering from thoracic surgery.
He was due to attend an event on October 27 to mark the 40th anniversary of St John Paul II’s World Day of Prayer for Peace.
The Pope’s health condition was confirmed earlier this month after the Vatican said he had undergone a “successful” planned surgery to remove the lower lobe of his right lung.
Lung adenocarcinoma is a common type of lung cancer.
Charles and Leo made history in 2025 when they prayed together in the Vatican’s Sistine Chapel in a symbolic moment of unity for Anglicans and Roman Catholics across the globe.
It was the first time a British monarch, the Supreme Governor of the Church of England, had prayed at a public service with the Pope, head of the Catholic Church, since the Reformation.”
This very neatly sets out what has passed between Charles and Pope Leo XIV, during 2025/2026. It does not, of course, explain what has been going on between Charles and the Roman Catholic Church for years – he has a history (as does England!).
The English Constitution, sets out as Law who may become the king or queen of England, and is clear; the (English) Bill of Rights 1688/1689 and again in the Act of Settlement 1701 it is declared:
“…all and every person and persons that is, are or shall be reconciled to or shall hold communion with the See or Church of Rome, or shall profess the popish religion, or shall marry a papist, shall be excluded and be forever incapable to inherit, possess or enjoy the crown and government of this realm …or to have, use or exercise of any regal power, authority or jurisdiction within the same; and in all and every such case or cases the people of these realms shall be and are hereby absolved of their allegiance; and the said crown and government shall from time to time descend to and be enjoyed by such person or persons , being Protestants, as should have inherited and enjoyed the same, in case said person or persons so reconciled, holding communion, or professing, or marrying, as aforesaid, were naturally dead…”
Whether Charles is a covert Roman Catholic (or a covert Muslim or whatever), by his reported actions over a long period of time, but especially over the past two years, he has shown that he is reconciled to and holds communion with the See or Church of Rome and is therefore not, and possibly never has been, or, at least, is no longer the King of England, according to law.
Whether he ever was King is another (crucial) matter, as it goes to the legality of everything he has purported to do since his supposed coronation after the death of Queen Elizabeth II.
It calls into question the legality of Charles’ invitation to the Labour Party to form ‘his government’ after the General Election of 2024, of every subsequent action of the Government and of every Act of Parliament purportedly passed since July 2024, if not before.
Charles is not the King of England and we, the people, owe him no allegiance according to English Constitutional Law. This is by operation of law; we don’t have to do anything about it.
The country should be looking for someone in the Line of Succession, who is eligible to be the Monarch, according to English Constitutional Law.
